Earlier this week, it was speculated that Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox was just a pen-stroke away. It was a move that followed the announcement of plans to launch their own subscription-based streaming service in 2019, seemingly arming themselves for a war with the already established small-screen giant that is Netflix.
By the time their new platform goes live, Netflix will be stripped completely of its Disney titles, a bleak prospect for anyone that can derive any enjoyment at all from the painfully cheese-and-corn Marvel series that have gained a popularity well beyond their actual quality.
And while there's no ink lost just yet, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Disney intends to put a halt to all new Marvel series on Netflix, with all future titles airing exclusively on their soon-to-come proprietary platform. As for the current Marvel line-up on Netflix -- Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, The Defenders and the upcoming Punisher spin-off -- they appear safe for now, though it appears safe to assume that they'll either also make the jump or be canceled altogether.
Obviously, it's too soon to say how this will all play out. It does, however, appear that Marvel's time with Netflix is running out in a hurry. And with the X-Men, Spider-Man, Deadpool and, holy shit, Star Wars, franchises all looking to be in the air as the Fox deal is sorted, Disney's got heavyweight content on its side. Netflix be damned.
