Willis Earl Beal Returns w/ A Stripped-Bare Take On "Flying So Low" + Announces New 'Noctunes' LP
You may have thought that billowing brilliance of Willis Earl Beal had subsided, but your boy's not done yet. Last we heard from the Chicago-born, blues-leaning songwriter, he had independently released his Experiments In Time LP, following a break from XL Recordings. Today he's resurfaced with a new-ish tune and the announcement of the forthcoming Noctunes project. "Flying So Low" is a concertedly minimal arrangement; nothing but haunting, spacey synth & string beds and Beal's guttural wail. A far cry from the bluesy treatment of the track that surfaced on the OST of Memphis, starring the man himself. Noctunes is slated for an August 28th arrival, but you can stream the track down below along with a statement from Willis Earl Beal on the new record.
"People had all these ideas about what I was supposed to be," he said. "I had only ever wanted to make lullabies. ... I wanted to create this persona that could say everything perfectly with very little. The record, to me, is a perfect record. I listen to that thing a lot, and it helps me."
