Boone left the critically acclaimed show in November 2018 while Mitchell was fired from the scripted series in May 2019.
Tiffany Boone has finally opened about her departure from Lena Waithe’s scripted series, The Chi for the first time.
Back in November 2018, she left the show after alleging she was harassed by her co-star Jason Mitchell. In an Instagram post, she shared an expansive statement featuring her experiences on set.
Mitchell was fired from the show in May 2019 after Boone and showrunner Ayanna Floyd Davis came forward with allegations of intimidation and abuse, according to Deadline. Though she didn’t use Mitchell’s name in her statement she did go on to share the following: “I felt that if I didn’t speak up, other voices that were trying to be heard would be silenced.”
When addressing going to HR to speak about the issues she was experiencing she shared she’d already spoken to them and high-level producers about a few of her concerns after season one. She added, “I returned for season two, feeling assured that HR training would set the show on the right track. However, once we started filming, I quickly realized that not everyone was interested in creating a work environment that was conducive to each person feeling safe, seen, and heard.”
Boone then noted she had more discussions with HR which led to her request to be released from her contract.
The rest of the statement reads:
“You don’t carelessly leave a ‘hit show’ that is praised by your community. I deeply love Chicago and the people of that city who have embraced me. I felt honored and privileged to be part of telling their story. The weight of what I was leaving behind felt like a ton, but the weight of my responsibility to speak up was even heavier. There were people who questioned my decision. How could I be sure I would work again, especially on a project of that magnitude? I wasn’t sure, but I had faith that once I took that leap I could be guided wherever I was supposed to go.”
Following Mitchell’s firing, he was also dismissed from the Netflix movie Desperados. There was a similar allegation from a female co-star during the production stage of this project. Four months ago, he publicly denied all allegations of misconduct in an interview with The Breakfast Club.
Since leaving The Chi, Boone was cast in Jordan Peele’s Amazon series Hunters and Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu.
