I've done some pretty heavy ranting on the perils of less-than-stellar bars over J Dilla's suites in the last few months. To be clear, I'm sticking to my objections and hoping for an all-out halt in the years to come. Recently, my objections have been validated by the oddest of sources. Namely, by mock rap trio, The Lonely Island, who stopped by the Sway's Universe studio recently to share similar sentiments in regards to their beat selections. The trio, on the verge of releasing their first feature-length film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, discussed just how they gathered the skeletal beats that would be compiled into the score of their film, claiming to have been sent atonal and experimental beats from the likes of RZA and even J Dilla, but opted not to use them out of reverence for the gawds, knowing deep down that they'd only muddy up the tracks. Now if only the struggle rappers of our day could use such impeccably reasoned judgement in their own selection process. Watch The Lonely Island's Sway's Universe interview down below and catch them on the big screen when their film finally lands on June 2nd, featuring cameos from Seal, Usher, Questlove and plenty more.
