DMV Veterans yU & Slimkat Return As The 1978ers With The Announcement Of Their Forthcoming 'People Of Today' LP, Due Out November 11th Via Mello Music Group.

Diamond District MC yU and producer Slimkat return as The 1978ers to announce their forthcoming People Of Today LP, which is due to drop on November 11th via Mello Music Group. News of the 18-track collection - available as a digital download, CD and limited-edition double LP - is accompanied by the first taste of the project entitled "A People's Intro Act I." The impending project is the latest from the duo since their critically-acclaimed collaborative work on yU's The Earn and Before Taxes LP's. yU and Slimkat's knockout combination of philosophical bars laced with lush imagery and seamless production is primed to shake up the world once more with the arrival of their impending Mello Music Group debut, which has all of the qualifications to be a certified classic:

On their Mello Music debut, People of Today, yU and Slimkat exhibit the level of one-rapper and one-producer chemistry that mostly disappeared after Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth split up. yU spits with acrobatic technique and life-scarred lyrics. Slimkat transplants soul, jazz, and psychedelic loops onto new technicolor foundations. The result captures the feel of classic hip-hop while recognizing the need to update the sonic architecture.

But it resonates far beyond aesthetics. The core principle is to manifest music as an exchange of ideas. yU and Slimkat aren’t trying to talk down to the people of today, but rather to connect with them. It’s for those exhausted with the shuck and jive of pop culture, who believe in the purification rituals offered by hard snares, funky drum kicks, soul-coughing bass, and deeply rooted vibrations.

It’s music intended to instill confidence and remind you to appreciate the minor miracles of daily existence: family, friends, music. yU artfully walks the line of positivity without being preachy. The stakes are high and the eye for detail is vivid. The People of Today are plagued by guns and poverty, racism and corrupt cops and hoop dreams that can quickly turn to nightmares.
