Sharon Jones Was Singing Till The End, Says Dap Kings' Gabriel Roth
It's with both a very heavy heart and high hopes that we report that Sharon Jones's cancer has returned.
While speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend, the Dap Tone Records frontwoman and modern soul legend confirmed that she will undergo a new round of chemotherapy treatments for the disease. Jones was at the festival to help celebrate the world premiere of Miss Sharon Jones!, a new feature-length documentary directed by legendary filmmaker Barbara Kopple.
“I start chemo on Wednesday,” Jones said, according to the blog Thompson on Hollywood. “But I’m gonna keep fighting. We got a long way to go.” The Dap Kings, along with Jones's oncologist James Leonardo, joined her on stage during the announcement. ToH also reports that Leonardo told the TIFF crowd “People ask me how I can do what I do. This is how.”
Exclaim notes that Jones brought up the frightening diagnoses at Hamilton, Ontario performance as well, stressing “I may be in a bit of pain, but it’s alright." Jones confessed that she's experiencing a “pins-and-needles feeling in her extremities,” but remained resolute. “I still got my energy, and I’m going to keep dancing and shouting until this cancer gets out!” In addition to Miss Sharon Jones!, the 59-year-old recently announced an upcoming holdiay-themed album and still has a substantial touring schedule on the books. Hopefully those plans will be completely unchanged by chemo and her road to recovery (again). We're rooting for you Sharon--you can beat this.
