On the surface it may seem that hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and president-elect Donald Trump are worlds apart. But their relationship goes back decades, well before the Trump had any intention of running for the nation's highest office and revealed himself to be one of the most deplorably divisive figures in US history. Just as shocked as any of us are to find that man in office, Simmons, a "real friend" of Trump, is equally disturbed.
So disturbed, in fact, that upon learning of his victory, the Def Jam founder wrote an impassioned open letter to president-elect, warning him of the dangers that lay in mishandling such an impactful title. Simmons writes:
"I, like millions of Americans, will watch you very closely. Every statement you make. Every tweet you send out. Every person you hire. Every document you sign. We will be watching you to make sure that your power does not corrupt the entire union. We will never be caught off guard by any move you make that would hurt the most vulnerable in this country."
