Revivalist Audio: NEXT Collective Covers "Marvin's Room"

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Concord Jazz super-group the NEXT Collective presents an awesome take on Drake's "Marvin's Room" - a recording highlighted by a lyrically driven performance from trumpeter Christian aTunde Adjuah. The group of proven heavyweights brimming with sonic youth has approached a wide range of material in the process of completing their recent release Cover Art. The project includes covers of tracks from D'Angelo, Jay-Z, Bon Iver, Me'Shell Ndegeocello and Pearl Jam to name a few. "Marvin's Room" is one of many examples of the group's immense collective talent, acute ear for detecting the song within a song and awesome knack for bringing the raw emotion of the source track to the fore in instrumental performance. In the case of this song, aTunde Adjuah focuses on Drake's vocal performance and draws from that for a gorgeous reinterpretation on a muted horn. As subtle and brash as Drake's delivery tends to be, the end product from Next Collective is one that preserves that character without failing to push the original composition to it's musical boundaries. Check it out below.
