With his last album Words Paint Pictures, Rapper Big Pooh has put forth a stirring meditation on race in America, perhaps at its strongest on the album’s second track “Stop.” Over a brooding and booming production from WPP‘s sole beat constructor Apollo Brown, Pooh takes us through the racing mind of a black man being pulled over by the cops, contemplating just how deadly the situation could turn at any given point, citing the countless names of the victims of police brutality, before realizing that the encounter went smoother than he could have ever imagined. The video –directed by Jay Brown— embodies that internal turmoil by recreating the scene to the tee, leaving the viewer with a sense of hopeful futility, but striking and intensely thought-provoking nonetheless. Words Paint Pictures is out now via Mello Music Group and features guest spots from Ras Kass, Marv One, L’Orange and more.
