Rakim, Smif N Wessun + More To Perform At Upcoming #24HrsOfPeace Show In N
Prompted by a seemingly never-ending a string of violent deaths in America, many of them involving police officers and unarmed civilians, community organizers in New Jersey well rally in Newark Friday to celebrate the fifth annual #24HrsOfPeace, a moment of music, discussion and demonstrations in the name of stemming violence in the streets of America. A host of hip-hop luminaries including Rakim, Smif N Wessun, Das EFX and DJ Marley Marl will be on hand, along with the event’s founder, MC and Newark native Hakim Green.
In a press release, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka stressed that “24 Hours Of Peace is an outstanding community organization, working tirelessly to unite and enable our youth so that they can achieve personal success and prosperity.” Baraka said the event exemplifies hip-hop itself and praised its motto of “Peace, Love, Unity, and Safely Having Fun.” Musicians, concerned citizens and local elected officials will all play important roles in #24HrsOfPeace. Music performances from Rakim, Smif-N-Wessun and more will take place the evening of Friday, August 28th with family film presentations following until 3:30 a.m. Things pick back up at 7 a.m. Saturday with morning jazz, prayer and Gospel music, and continue with African dance, marital arts displays and more performances
“Peace in this very spot represents the potential of our united presence in the community. This location is also just blocks from the childhood home of Mayor Baraka, who will always stand tall as a proud native of the South Ward,” Green said ahead of the event.
