Prince Partied Until 4 A.M. w/ WNBA Champions Minnesota Lynx
The Minnesota Lynx claimed the 2015 WNBA Championship title Wednesday night, cruising to a 69-52 victory over Indiana to claim their third title in five years. Yes, the Lynx are a hoops dynasty—and a certain very funky fan is all about it.
Prince reportedly threw a very special party for the victorious team, an all-night purple rager that included a full-on live performance by him and his 3RDEYEGIRL band. Timeless cuts including "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy" were played for the reveling crowd, which according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune topped out at approximately 150—a mix of Lynx team members and Target Center arena staff.
The Tribune notes that "The lengthy opening set was heavy on hits including “Kiss,” “When Doves Cry” and “Hot Thing” (“hot thing, world champs,” Prince sang). Even though the set was improvised with a revamped band (featuring guitarist Donna Grantis of his band 3rdEyeGirl, drummer Kirk Johnson and bassist MonoNeon), Prince seemed as focused as the Lynx had been earlier in the evening." Minnesota Lynx star told the paper “I didn’t expect this party,” before calling Prince's musical showing "unbelievable.”
Several team members were brought on stage to dance, but the crowd dwindled to roughly 35 hearty souls as Prince pushed on toward 4 a.m., stopping just shy of sunrise. "When he got into the middle of the dance floor," writes the Strib, "he feigned like he was going to fall over from exhaustion. He steadied himself and marched off like a champion."
And amidst it all, Prince apparently had enough energy to fire off a tweet:
