With all of the fable-like legends surrounding Prince‘s purple afterglow, the world has to wonder just how many can be chalked up to conjecture, how many of those tales are more than mere myth. Today, the internets bring us just that musical litmus test, as the previously unreleased Loring Park Sessions have been freed from their dingy vaults for you to experience the greatness of the young master well before his major label debut the following year.
According to the stans at prince.org, the sessions were recorded in the house of Prince’s first manager, Owen Husney, in 1977 featuring just a trio, comprised, a 19-year-old Prince, Bobby Z and longtime friend and collaborator, Andre Cymone. Though the album features instrumentals only, it’s an intimate and terribly funky lens into P’s proficiency on damn-near every instrument, with Bobby Z and Cymone proving to be very capable accompaniment for the purple prodigy, only just beginning on his path to bonafide stardom.
