"A Tragedy Beyond Measure": Pharrell Mourns Cousin Donovon Lynch Killed By Police

Pharrell shared news of his cousin's death on Instagram Monday evening.

Pharrell has identified a man shot and killed by police in Virginia Beach as his cousin, Donovon Lynch.

The artist shared an Instagram post about Lynch Monday evening. Lynch was one of two people killed last Friday during overnight shootings along the city's oceanfront, according to NBC12. The other person killed was a woman who police said was likely an innocent bystander, and died at the scene from a gunshot wound. The other person, Lynch, was killed by a police officer.

"The loss of these lives is a tragedy beyond measure," Pharrell wrote alongside a picture of Lynch. "My cousin Donovon was killed during the shootings. He was a bright light and someone who always showed up for others. It is critical my family and the other victims’ families get the transparency, honesty and justice they deserve. Virginia Beach is the epitome of hope and tenacity and, as a community, we will get through this and come out even stronger."

Something in the Water, the Virginia Beach music festival organized by Pharrell, also tweeted condolences to Lynch's family. (Lynch was a volunteer at the festival.)

"We don’t have the words to fully express how sorry we are about the loss of this beautiful life. We thank you and your family for your light and service. The VA Beach community and beyond will miss you," the tweet said.

In a separate report from WAVY, police said Lynch was armed when they came in contact with him, and that a firearm was recovered at the scene. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation takes place.
