PBS Beat Making Lab drops heavy bass in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where the students learn how to write lyrics and sample instruments to create an original drum kit in the second half of the first episode from Ethiopia. The budding producers get to work in the studio and quickly realize they face several challenges - the biggest one is deciding upon the subject matter of the song. Some members of the group express nervousness about the topic as they work to spread awareness about public health issues. In the end the group comes up with a booming beginning to their collaborative track and a beautiful vocal to go along with it. The next installment of the PBS Beat Making Lab includes a beat making challenge sampling a traditional Ethiopian instrument called a Masinko and a chant from the Ethiopia versus South Africa World Cup Qualifier. Watch the second half of episode 1 below. Get the full rundown at Okayafrica.
