Those fortunate enough to reside in New York City were treated to a three-act epic live show last month as Okayafrica brought Tuareg guitar phenomenon Bombino, electro auteurs Young Fathers, and roots/blues hero Fantastic Negrito to Central Park for their very special SummerStage live show, and the results were positively explosive. Building on the momentum of last year’s electro-centric event, our African cohorts took things in a bit more organic direction, and yet only upped the energy level. Not a single body was left unmoved by the three performers, who each reveled in the chance to play in such an iconic public space. “Last year I was playing on the streets here, in the subway stations,” Negrito said. “And this summer I’m on SummerStage.”
“The live show is live, it’s energetic. It’s real. It’s like the church, without the religion. You’re gonna feel it,” Negrito continued. For those aching for a chance to relive the day’s magic (or for those poor souls who missed out entirely) Okayafrica has just published a video recap of their SummerStage set, which takes us on stage, behind the scenes and into the crowd–full rhythmic immersion.
