The Bay Area's Motown On Mondays Party Series Lands In Brooklyn On April 4th With An All-Star Lineup Of Selectors, Including DJ's Tara, Tap.10, Mawkus, Still Life & DStrukt.

The Bay Area's legendary Motown On Mondays party series lands in Brooklyn on April 4th with an all-star lineup of selectors including DJ's Tara, Tap.10, Mawkus, Still Life and DStrukt. Preserving the legacy of the iconic Detroit soul label while expanding upon its signature "Motown Sound," the weekly series minted in San Francisco has branched out to explore a number of cities and varied takes on the music in just under a decade. Bringing the party to the storied streets of Bed-Stuy, Motown On Mondays marks the beginning of yet another chapter. Accordingly, we asked Still Life, a key member of the MoM squad who also repped SF on our AREACODES series with Samsung last week, to guest curate a special edition of Mixtape Monday. He came back with a full exclusive MoM BK mixtape (mixed by DJ Tara & Mawkus)--which we are proud to present here in it's World Puh-miere! --as well as a grip of other mixes assembled with the input of fellow MOM BK player DStrukt.

Motown stands as easily one of the most important and influential record labels of all time. Distinctive and yet difficult to define, the "Motown sound" can mean different things depending on the context and perspective. For the last seven years, a collective of DJs has been celebrating and expanding on the Motown catalog under the Motown On Mondays (or MoM) banner. The weekly party series began in San Francisco and has expanded to numerous cities across the country, as well as an ongoing collection of custom remixes, edits and re-interpretations. The MoM approach is a broad and inclusive one, incorporating originals, custom remixes, cover versions, and close relatives of the Motown sound for a party that pays tribute to the label's legacy while contextualizing the music for modern dance floors.

Monday April 4th sees the launch of Motown on Mondays BK at Bed-Vyne Brew (370 Tompkins Ave) in Bed-Stuy. DJs Tara, Tap.10, Mawkus, Still Life & Dstrukt comprise the dream team resident DJ line-up, and special guests are sure to be showing up as well. The party begins at 6:00 PM and ends at midnight, giving you a chance to get loose to quality music without losing sleep at the beginning of the week. With just a week left until the party launches, the MoM BK crew is taking over Mixtape Mondays with an exclusive mix of their own, as well as a round-up of other mixes that are worth checking for. - DJ Still Life

The Northern Soul scene in the UK in late 1960s and '70s drew inspiration from the classic Motown sound, with selectors digging extremely deep to unearth uptempo soul cuts in the Motown mold that would go on to become dancefloor classics. It was the Northern Soul community that popularized the Motown obscurity “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)” by Frank Wilson, re-issuing the single (of which only two original copies exist), and making it one of the most sought after 45 RPM records ever (according to Goldmine, the value of an original copy could approach $100,000).

Jazzamatazz’s recurring “Keep The Faith Flowing” series on Bombshell radio is a great resource for Northern Soul knowledge. Currently 8 episodes deep, the series presents rare and classic singles like Don Varner’s “Tear Stained Face” in a dancefloor-friendly mixed format. Savvy DJs would do well to take notes on the tracklist, as many of these songs are floor-tested classics that don’t turn up easily. - DJ Still Life

DJ Mumbles – Let’s Play House Vol. 13 (Michael Jackson Tribute)

Review: Let’s Play House.. No we’re not talking about Barbie and Ken, neither are we talking about the west coast gangster rap duo The Dogg Pound. We’re talking about this all-around Michael Jackson house mixtape brought to you by DJ Mumbles. You’ll hear everything from your soulful, deep house remixes to a club joint or two. Mike was always known for getting his groove on and there’s no question this mixtape will get you moonwalking your ass to the dance floor.

The anniversary of J Dilla’s passing in February tends to bring new tributes to Motown’s finest each year, and Exile and Choosey’s mix might be one of the freshest we’ve heard so far. There’s a kinetic energy that suits Dilla’s “straight from the cassette” aesthetic in the way Exile flips Dilla classics on the MPC while Choosey freestyles over the top. The talent and love on display here is moving.

For some bonus Dilla beats, check out MoM BK resident Dstrukt’s intricate Dilla tribute set from this year’s Donuts Are Forever series.

On March 22nd 2016 we lost one of Hip Hop’s most influential MCs, the 5 foot assassin, funky diabetic, Midnight Marauder, Queens native Phife Dawg. He was clearly one of best ever touch the M-I-C so it’s only right that we present you with the proper M-I-X (pun intended) that’ll highlight his undeniable swagger. DJ Yoda really went in on this one, talk about styles upon styles upon styles. Yoda’s mini-mix has perfect balance of technicality and fluency, you’ll have the nerdy deejays geekin out while chicks are doin’ the Wop.

For all the diggers, fusionist, jazz cats and audiophiles this one is for you. DJ Ian Head pulls some of the most obscure joint from his stack, hence the name “Pullin

From the Stacks”. This isn’t your typical Starbucks, caramel Frappuccino w/ a sprinkle of cinnamon mixtape. It’s more like a cup of Kopi Luwak coffee with a side of golden opulence sundae, abstract yet digestible. Get your neck ready, you’re about to be taken on a journey through some intricate head-nodding rhythms, neck brace not included.

MoM BK resident DJ Mawkus holds down an open-format radio show with Singapore’s Darker Than Wax crew. Rooted in electronic sounds of the future, the mix is grounded in spaced-out jazz and dusty funk. This is some way-out shit.
