Hudson Mohawke 500w
Happy equinox to all you mixtape mavens, maniacs and masters. The leaves are a little darker, the sky's a little cooler, and it seems the world's DJs are feeling much the same. This week's roundup of the best damn mixes the internet has to offer is a moodier menagerie than the summer set's we're used to; dark synth tones and wispy atmospherics are all over this aggregation. First up is Hudson Mohawke's towering BBC Radio guest mix, which pits Madlib and Slum Village against Keys N Krates and Kanye. Soulection radio's newest offering is heavy on Flying Lotus's feverish newtracks. Elsewhere deep dancehall and Brazilian pop await, so let's end this introduction and get right down to getting down.
After last week's DJ Premier takeover, it seems that Diplo's BBC radio show is becoming a regular staging ground for the world's greatest working DJs. This weekend Kanye collaborator and Scottish wunderkid Hudson Mohawke took the helm, steering us through an hour of crashing beats and crackling synths. His yet-to-be-named track with Action Bronson leads things off, and Rah Digga's spiky flow gets a prominent centerpiece spot. The mix is already garnering buzz thanks to TNGHT's chop of Yeezy's "Cold," but the entire thing bangs from front to back. It's darker, colder, and filled with stranger shadows. Time to take the outdoor cookout party back inside the laser-lit club.

Label Soulection has a welcome addition to the week's array of stylized sound with their new radio episode--a dense three hours of hip-hop, loose jazz, blue-eyed soul, and (of course) J Dilla. The latter portion's instrumental section of Mobb Deep and Dr. Dre joints is worth the listen alone, and Mr. Carmac's appearance is a sure sign that the season of colder, heavier beats has begun.

As the northern hemisphere turns toward fall, the summer's getting started below the equator. "Balnearico is the word we came up with when trying to find a concept that would embrace the feeling one can get from listening to these sunny, bright songs produced in the late ’70s up to the mid-’80s, no matter the genre they’re attached to—funk, rock, boogie, reggae, disco, electro, et cetera," DJs Millos Kaiser and Trepanadotold Wax Poetics last week. The Balnearico mix is anything but an old-school bossa nova romp, but tinges of flute and background bongos still remain. A disco and funk-infused survey of the Brazilian 70s and 80s, the mix is bound to make Gap Band, Hall & Oates, and Chromeo funkateers go giddy.

You've warned: this mix comes with a risk of unhinging fragile minds. Chicago's BRKER dove deep into the strange world of Captain Murphy, Flying Lotus's alter MC ego--the one with a penchant for literally melting faces. BRKER's mix is an homage to the ghastly phantom rapper and is spawned from hip-hop's fiendish out-of-the-way alleys. DJShadow, Shabazz Palaces, Sampha and of course FlyLo abound. Lock the door, light a seance candle, and let your funky nightmares take control.
There's no stopping the funk on Swedish DJ/mixer/composer Opolopo's latest Boogie Bump mix which burns straight through its hour-long length with absolutely no let up for wear dancefloor denizens. Hopefully you got some cardio in over the summer months, because from the drop of the mix master's remix for Mad8, the handclaps never quit. The set's 11 tracks of house, late disco, funk and soul have us wondering if the new hub of heavenly sound might be stationed in Stockholm.

Tall Black Guy is making a grab at your eardrums' attention spans this autumn with the announcement of fresh Australian tour dates. The expert, ever-so-subtle beatmaker got a proper tribute last week from Oz's own Mz Rizk, whose hour-long TBG mix is nothing but creamy and proper production. The flute of "Sexci Senhora" coasts easily by, and a dirty drums flip of Sade's "The Sweetest Taboo" is simply too damn lovely. Pour yourself a bit of spiced brandy and let this one keep you warm.
Common - "I Used To Love H.E.R" (Tall Black Guy Remix)
