Mixtape Mondays: DJ Brainchild X Janet Jackson, DJ Ayres X DJ Eleven + Sy Smith X Eavesdrop

Janet Jackson as a child star

We got a strong Mixtape Mondays for y’all this week but it’s a slightly bittersweet one, since DJ Sam Champ, who has been running point on this column (and a lot of other things) for Okayplayer worked his last day in the OKP office Friday. Monsieur Champ has left out to the left coast, where he got a new job at a company which shall remain un-named (hint: the logo is an apple and it’s bit off of) so we will just have to soldier on without him. Fortunately, however, he left behind links to a few mixes to ease the Monday after the Friday farewell bashy. There’s OKP OG DJ Brainchild running down the illustrious career of “Black Doll” Janet Jackson, homies DJ Ayres & Eleven turning in another installment of Rub Radio and one excellent underground Philly podcast, complete with an interview from vocalist Sy Smith. Best of all is this little piece of mixtape news: somewhere around mid-week we’ll be dropping the Official Roots Picnic 2012 Mixtape, featuring music from all the artists on this year’s bill, cut together by Philly’s own Low B of Hollertronix fame. Watch for it and get into these other mixes after the jawn. I mean jump.

DJ Brainchild – Black Doll: The Janet Jackson Mix:

This is not only Ms. Jackson’s birthday present from Brainchild, its also his parting gift as he announces his semi-retirement from the DJ lifestyle (told you it was bittersweet). Here’s what he had to say:

You may have heard through the grapevine that I’m “retiring” from DJing, and it’s true. I’m giving it up for awhile to focus on other things. But there are a few mixes I have lying around that either need to be finished, or just need to be uploaded. This mix right here is one of them.

May 16, 2012 marks Janet Jackson’s 46th birthday. I’ve been a huge fan ever since I was a little kid and this is just a mix of some of my personal favorites songs of hers. Unfortunately I couldn’t cram every gem I wanted to in here (i.e. “Diamonds”), but there’s plenty for you to dig on.

Junior and Lil’ Dave  X Sy Smith Eavesdrop Podcast #108:
DJs Junior and Lil’ Dave have been holding down a radio show in Philly for several years on WKDU 91.7FM. They consistently present artists from all over the musical spectrum — soul, jazz, electro, house. But whatsever they play, it’s got to be FUNKY. Recently they interviewed a really talented vocalist in the studio, Sy Smith (if ya don’t know, now ya know). Check the tracklist for the entire show — or just trust us that it’s good — and stream it.
