Mixtape Monday:The Gaslamp Killer, DJ Rashad Hayes, DJ Matman + More!
We're very pleased to bring you what may be the final Mixtape Monday roundup of 2015--a final batch of audio presents, gift wrapped and nestled under the tree just for you and yours. And given that's the case, we've determined to go out in style with a dynamic duo set from The Gaslamp Killer, shot on video by the great folks at Boiler Room. Further on down the line we're bringing you new sounds from DJ Rashad Hayes, Complexion and some vintage holiday-inspired Cookin' Soul goodness. It's time to end the year on a high, funky note. Mixtapes begin now.
The Gaslamp Killer delivered the goods, as per usual, during a 5 year anniversary Boiler Room set in Los Angeles last month. Video of the session has just recently made its way online, and so if you're just hearing this for the first time or revisiting it for another go-round, you'll definitely enjoy watching and learning as GLK goes to work atop the decks.

Our own good friend DJ Rashad Hayes has made your holiday entertaining easy this year with a mixtape full of mostly-modern bangers that will surely keep people moving out on the dance floor. The man himself explains the set just so:
Whipped up this fun mix featuring young stars Drake, Future, Bryson Tiller, Kendrick Lamar, Game, Ty $, PartynextDoor, Travis Scott, Tory Lanez & Post Malone. Also included unreleased Dr. Dre track (!), & some classics. Work out to it, Vibe out, Just a cool mix. :)
Nothing but hip-hop and R&B cuts about the thing that rules all our lives...phones. DJ Matman put it into perspective:
The recent success of 'Hotline Bling' had me thinking about all the other good phone-related tracks out there, and before I knew it I had a fresh mixtape on my hands! At just over an hour long 'The Hotline Mix' mix squeezes in close to 50 Hip Hop, RnB, Disco, Funk & Reggae bangers from artists such as Biggie, Tupac, Nas, Swindle, Jill Scott, Bounty Killer, Blackstreet, Rick James, ATCQ, Pharaoh Monch, Zhane, ODB, Loose Ends, Missy Elliot, Al Green, Slum Village, Usher, Robert Glasper, Erykah Badu, Busy Signal, Kraftwerk, De La Soul, Public Enemy, Tweet, Jay-z, and many more!
I also managed to incorporate my love of Comedy, lacing the mix with skits from the likes of Louis CK, Dave Chapelle, Aziz Ansari, Kayvan Novak, Craig Robinson, Joe Rogan, Seinfeld, & The Jerky Boys. Enjoy!
Listen to the entire thing below, and don't forget to put your phone down for a bit and savor the groove. This is an ingenious piece of work right here.

DJ Optimus - Jukebox Delight vol.3 by Ldbk on Mixcloud
One of the absolute most-tasteful compositions we've heard in quite some time, Para One's 90's NYC Hip-Hop mix for Rinse FM is exactly what it needs to be. Hard-hitting in its kick-snare knock and so damn on point lyrically, it's got us in love with that East Coast thing all over again.

Mistah Rapsey did it once more with his Collaborator mixtape series, this time tappingJehan to share a dynamic set that spans across multiple eras in its effort to craft the perfect blend of beats. Jehan put his half of the broadcast into perspective:
I wanted this mix to bridge 2015 with the sounds and feel of yesteryear. Most (if not all) of the tunes were recorded this year, but each of the artists wear their appreciation of music history on their sleeves - from DJ Harrison’s tape hiss to Ravyn Lenae’s soulful timbre. Whether the tracks have a lo-fi feel, a deep analogue warmth, or a purely conceptual linkage to the masters, my aim is that the mix connects us to the past as we remember it… or re-imagine it. - Jehan
From there, Rapsey delivers a set that's meant to mirror the vibe of Jehan, and we can attest that both selectors absolutely nail it. Dig in.

"This mix explores the old while looking to the future, a new breed of talent from SA, the music that’s influenced us, presenting new ideas. This mix may need time to marinate, it will allow for an understanding of the future of music and club culture in South Africa. We’re currently living in very challenging times, the world is about to erupt, we may not even be here for very long, so lets make the best of today."
Piano virtuoso Nils Frahm has put together a holiday mix of his favorite Christmas music, and it's a fantastic little bit of winter warmth.
