Mixtape Monday: DJ Spinna's Maya Angelou Tribute, House Shoes, Iron Lyon + More!
Keep your shades on and your music turned a little low--Mixtape Monday is still in recovery mode from the monumental weekend hip-hop bonanza that was the Roots Picnic. If you were there, you know exactly what we're talking about and if you weren't...well, you'll be glimpsing videos soon. Still, we've got a postiviely stellar roundup of mixes for you, including DJ Spinna's just-dropped tribute to Maya Angelou, plus new funky selections from House Shoes and Iron Lyon, some late night house vibes from newcomer Kinder and a whole lot more. Consider this your sonic recouperation session for whatever it was you got up to in the last 48 hours.
The more-than-legendary DJ Spinna put in a mammoth amount of work to prep his new mixtape, dubbed "Tribute to the Ancestors" and dedicated to Mya Angelou. Clocking in just shy of two hours, the mix leans heavily on jazz, soul and the more abstract roots material that have always been the ancestral beginnings of hip-hop. Spinna had this to day about the mix:
"I had the wondrous opportunity of meeting the late and profound Maya Angelou over a decade ago. This particular encounter was at an all white party on the estate of Ashford & Simpson, of which I was spinning. Upon taking this photo, I made the mistake of slightly slouching my body in the seat, which in turn led Mrs. Angelou to swiftly blurt out "Sit up straight in your seat young man!" This reprimand was alarming, yet I felt the urgency to comply. That brief moment in time was definitely one of the most compelling of my entire life. I was in the presence of authority & eloquence simultaneously. An all around renaissance woman, Maya Angelou represents life as it pertains to the human struggle, specifically the Black human struggle. She transcended one year ago today. I did this all vinyl mix as a tribute to her & all ancestors who guide us through life. It's a spiritual Afro-jazzcentric collage, a soundscape needed in the U-N-I-Verse RIGHT NOW!"
The quality of Spinna's work is unimpeachable, and he once again hits it out of the park with this mix of rare grooves, all patched together for the divine purpose of celebrating Ms. Angelou. Listen to it and get yourself a good lesson.
It's been too long since House Shoes graced the pages of Mixtape Monday, but the Detroit selector has returned with a vengeance thanks to a new installment of the Fresh Selects/Tight Songs radio show. Digging into both excellent newness (there can never be too much Knxwledge in a Mixtape Monday) and great rare cuts, it's a gritty and head-knocking hour of music from one of the best in the game.

In one of the most thoroughly old school cooking sessions we've heard in a while, Iron Lyon has pulled out all the stops for his latest mixtape, simply entitled "The Breaks." And the breaks are in fact all here, from KRS-1 to some 'Kast, Tupac to Nas. It's another educational sample-and-the-track-that-flipped-it set, and Lyon handles it better than any we've heard in quite some time. Lyon posted the mix with a disclaimer: "if Young Thug is your favorite rapper DO NOT listen to this mix." We've got no beef with the Thugga, but that right there should tell you what to expect from this gem. Listen below.

Out of San Marcos, Texas comes (iN)Sect Records-signee Kinder, a beatmaker and producer that goes by many other aliases including Hymnal and the 1100 Spoon Ensemble. Kinder has moved around extensively in his life and can cite Venezuela, Turkey, the UK, Scotland and Germany as former homes. Now, though, South Texas has become his den of choice and in his new "Absolving the Absolutes" mix (which was made special for Wax Poetics), the producer has compiled a house set for anyone who's ever shied away from the genre in the past. Soul samples and soothing beats inundate the mix, which comes across as a smart, post-party chillout soundtrack, rather than a raging club batch. Put it on and drift a while.

Continuing his generous series of throwback-tinged uploads, O Wang has released a brand new mix entitled "Let it Whirl," a vibrant party-making affair loaded with throwback soul, rare funk and plenty of Latin fire. In its lengthy self-made liner notes, Wang broke down his reasons for picking each track, thus enriching this 70 minute dance session into an immersive personal sonic document. It's a reminder that here and in many other cases, the mixtapes that make it into our roundup aren't just thrown together for promotional purposes--they're complex and carefully crafted works in and of themselves. Purchase a high quality version of the mix here, and once again do not miss Wang's liner notes.
Dingy, dusty and full of choice underground sh*t comes DJ Craig and DJ S&S. Scratched and screwed breaks, weird rarities and essential material all make it into this set. Peep the tracklist above and listen below.

To close this week's installment out, we once again tip our caps to the Parisian cats over at Futuronostro, who took their regular Rinse FM show to an even higher place last week with a set of progressive, bass-heavy beat music that has us wondering which way is up and how the hell we'll ever recover. Only adventurous minds need apply for this one. Until next week, keep moving to it.
