Maxine Waters Calls Ben Carson An 'Educated Fool'
The Democratic congresswoman spoke out against Ben Carson while speaking at the Congressional Black Caucus’ annual conference in Washington, D.C.
“Look at Ben Carson. My God. My grandmother would call him an educated fool,” Waters told said during the event on Thursday morning. “Here’s a man who has a reputation of being a highly competent surgeon, but when he talks about poor people, he says they’re the cause of their poverty. He doesn’t understand why you didn’t do what he did and why you didn’t make it like he made it. And he doesn’t know the difference between slavery and immigration.”
Several months ago, Carson spoke with friend and conservative media personality Armstrong Williams when he referred to poverty as “a state of mind,” explaining that some people are poor while others are not based on their outlook on life.
“You take somebody that has the right mindset, you can take everything from them and put them on the street, and I guarantee in a little while they’ll be right back up there,” Carson said. “You take somebody with the wrong mindset, you can give them everything in the world — they’ll work their way right back down to the bottom.”
Carson also stated that although he believes the government can assist people in getting out of poverty, he feels that certain programs that allow people to remain in poverty are not helpful.
“I think the majority of people don’t have that defeatist attitude, but they sometimes just don’t see the way, and that’s where government can come in and be very helpful,” Carson said. “It can provide the ladder of opportunity, it can provide the mechanism that will demonstrate to them what can be done.”
