Making Music With Ski Beatz, Flip-Flops & Samplers In PBS Beat Making Lab Pt. 3

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

The team behind UNC Chapel Hill's Beat Making Lab returns with commentary from Ski Beatz and beats made with flip-flops in Part 3 of the documentary series following the musical mission across the globe. Ski kicks things off with a phone call to the beat lab to discuss his reasons for sampling and the difference between analog and digital sounds. The footage then moves to the Solomon Islands where we meet Calvin Rore, an islander using PVC pipes and a flip-flop to create an awesome sound. Rore's musical interests follow the traditions of his ancestors, who first used bamboo and coconut shells to create the same groove. The crew takes a recording of his flip-flop percussion - a sound that falls somewhere between rhythm guitar and rudiments - back to the beat making lab to throw it into a sampler and pair it with live drums for a dance-ready beat with a good dose of snare. Check the footage below to watch the third episode of the Beat Making Lab, brought to you by Pierce Freelon, The Apple Juice Kid and PBS.
