Stanfield portrays a character called Demany, who is described as "a hustler who feeds moneyed marks to a diamond-district operator," with Adam Sandler's character, Howard Ratner, serving as the diamond-district operator. During filming, director Josh Safdie had hinted at Demany's background, suggesting that he might be a member of the New York sect of the Bloods gang. Around this time, Stanfield happened to be listening to Tekashi 69, the rapper who recently testified against his former crew, the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, in federal court in Manhattan.

During the interview, Stanfield spoke on 69's persona and shared that he channeled some of it in his role as Demany.

"I figured I might put a little bit of that into Demany," he said. "He’s reckless. He don’t really give a fuck."

Uncut Gems, which comes out December 13, also features Kevin Garnett, The Weeknd, and others.

Stanfield recently released a diss track directed at Charlamagne Tha God. The song came about after Stanfield called out  The Breakfast Club and other platforms like The Shade Room and Lipstick Alley for being “anti-black.”
