Kimbra is after our own nostalgic hearts in her new Disney tribute video, a clip that places her lovely image into the world of 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and updates the film's classic song "I'm Wishing" for the modern age.
But this is more than just a cover augmented with handclaps and a bit of synth bass. Kimbra worked directly with video artist Adam Sager to create what's quite frankly one of the most creative and beautiful music videos we've seen in a long, long time. Together with the help of green screen technology and immersive study of the original Disney film, they were able to make "Kimbra's Wish" a borderline shot-for-shot recreation of Snow White. The verisimilitude on this one is strong; the next time they shoot a live-action remake, Kimbra had better be at the casting call.
"Kimbra's Wish" marks Sager's first foray into music video directing, but he's been working with video compositing for a decade. "It's definitely an ambitious endeavor that we're udnertaking, but I couldn't ask for a better collaborator in Kimbra and better content to work with," Sager said while filming "Kimbra's Wish" on set.
Kimbra stars as both the titular damsel and her devilish Wicked Stepmother in the video. "I have so many favorite Disney songs, but this one really stuck out because it was one I felt I could actually retranslate somehow," Kimbra said. "I wanted to kind of give it a more R&B vibe--darken it a little bit and give it a sort of different energy, but retain the beauty of all the melodies." You can watch the full video below, and check out a little extra behind-the-scenes footage as well.
