Kelis has just released the soulful, Sunday morning track "Been Given A Morning" produced by Basshitter (perhaps a single off the long-awaited new album F.O.O.D?) The artist once known for club bangers has kept under the radar for awhile and has now released an entirely new sound for her that expresses the depth of musical knowledge of both writer and producer. Basshitter uses elements of electronica, jazz and pop--as well as classical elements with his use of gorgeous violins and horns--to create a sound far from the outer space vibe that we've become used to from Kelis. The song is stripped down to essentials - the instrumentals manage to create a powerful orchestra within its subtlety and weaves perfectly with Kelis's lyrics. The Federal Prism artist has grown exponentially since her Kaleidoscope days, trading in playful lyrics for thought out, lush libretto.
Earlier this year Kelis released another promising single produced by TV On the Radio's Dave Sitek entitled "Jerk Ribs" (also suspected to be a single off F.O.O.D) that mirrors the same maturity and growth we hear in "Been Given A Morning." If these releases are any indication of how great F.O.O.D is going to sound, this new album couldn't come any sooner. Take a listen down below:
