For two weeks now, the world has struggled to come to terms with the loss of Phife Dawg late last month. Since then, there's been a virtual flood of love and admiration for the Five Foot Assassin and his surviving family coming from every which way. We've heard Q-Tip's on-air vigil, seen Kendrick Lamar lead his own candle-lit salute, not to mention feeling the combined force of the entire galaxy of hip-hop converging on Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater just last week for a an everyone-under-the-sun tributary, that found all of A Tribe Called Quest, Chuck D, Andre 3000, Busta Rhymes and, yes, even Kanye West reflecting on the life and influence of our beloved Phife.
Last night, the one and only Jay Electronica sent up his own flair for the five-footer during a Minneapolis pit stop, where the enigmatic wordsmith led the crowd in a wall-shaking call-and-response of "Can I Kick It?" in Phife's honor, seamlessly transitioning into verse, which was, of course, straight flames. And once JayElec stood down, Twin City emcee, Metasota, came through with his own verbal assault, all in the name of the late Five Footer. You can watch Jay Electronica & Metasota throw it up for Phife Dawg below, just be sure to keep your eyes on us, the shouts and celebrations of Phife and all he's given us will continue forevermore. And you know just where to find them.
