UPDATE: The official Janelle Monáe x Miguel video for “PrimeTime” is here! Watch below:
The Electric Lady Janelle Monae has offered us a glimpse into the video for the epic collaboration that is “Primetime” featuring R&B’s go-to crooner Miguel. The song boasts some of the strongest harmonies this side of The Beach Boys, putting all other contemporary efforts at a minimal, yet captivating duet to shame. The song melds a more modern and intimate take on the 60’s post surfer-rock slow jams with the wizardry of Prince‘s darker ballad compositions, while the video plays out like Danny and Sandy doing “Summer Nights” (lets not kid ourselves, we’ve all “accidentally” seen Grease) strolling through Gotham City. The soaring sweetness of Janelle’s vocals lays down the perfect foundation for Miguel’s smokey mid-range to build on, adding extraordinary depth to what is already an incredibly gratifying sonic experience.
The track stems from an album drenched in powerhouse collaborations including Prince, Erykah Badu, Solange, Esperanza Spalding and the Electric Lady’s production team Deep Cotton, strutting the gifts of this generation’s most coveted performers. With one of the hottest albums of the year and a tour to boot, the Wondaland camp has some serious muscle. We’ll have the full video release tomorrow, however in the meantime, if you know whats good for you go cop The Electric Lady and take a gander at the teaser for Janelle Monae and Miguel’s timelessly sweet arrangement below.
