Full Crate Flips Some Classic Erykah Badu Material On "Hurt Your Back"

Erykah Badu is nothing if not magnetizing, and Amsterdam-based producer and DJ Full Crate is nothing if not open-eyed and versatile. Crate has crossed the line between house and soulful R&B time and time again, and now the pull of Badu's sultry vocal has pulled him across once more.. After dropping an A-grade chop of Beyoncé's "XO" late last year, the Dutchman is once again displaying his knack for sampling the best work of superstar songstresses. Yes, Erykah Badu's classic Mama's Gun single "Bag Lady" has been given the Full Crate treatment.

"Hurt Your Back" opens as a sparse uptempo house cut, Badu's vocal line on "Bad Lady"'s chorus slowly slinking into earshot. Full Crate builds the track ever-so-slowly, bringing in deeper bass, jittering hi-hats and a dancehall-inspired snare with care. It would have been easy to sample a wide swath of lush Erykah Badu stems, but the approach here is measured and much more reverent; Crate sounds eager to prove that his own production tactics can go toe-to-toe with Badu's pipes. It's a track that probably lands far outside the comfort zones of Erykah's core soul-head fanbase, but it also serves as an easy entrée into the world of artistic house. Picture yourself at a starlit skybar with a glistening sea in the distance--then turn up the volume, grab a drink, and meet Badu on the dancefloor; Full Crate will take of the beat.
