It appears, despite all her envelope-pushing aesthetics, that FKA Twigs is a pretty big fan of mainstream pop music. During a recent trip to the BBC Radio 1 “Live Lounge” Studios, Twigs was all too happy to perform a cover of Sia‘s megaton hit “Elastic Heart” (careful clicking on that video link, though–you might get more Shia Labeouf than you’re ready for this Thursday morning).
Backed by a scaled-live ensemble, FKA Twigs’s take on the song was, perhaps predictably, much more fragile and ethereal than the original studio recording. Also, given that movement and dance is such a crucial part of her artistic identity (it’s truly hard to “get” FKA Twigs until you see her perform live on stage), the 27-year-old offered us an additional treat with a minute of abstract dance added on to her in-studio set. Prior to the Sia cover, Twigs and her band performed “In Time,” the darkly gorgeous album cut from her recent M3LL155X EP. You can pick up that record on iTunes today (highly recommended) and watch the cover performance of “Elastic Heart” below. If Twigs is anything, she’s a risk-taker, and you’ve got to respect her acumen for genre-bending expression.
