Erykah Badu Pays Tribute to George Floyd on His 48th Birthday With His Family

Erykah Badu and George Floyd's family connected for a peaceful moment honoring Floyd on Tuesday while she was in Minneapolis for her latest tour stop.

Erykah Badu has shared a special moment with her social media followers paying tribute to George Floyd alongside his family.

Today, October 14 would have been Floyd’s 48th birthday so it’s fitting that Badu invited his family backstage at her tour stop in Minneapolis at the Minneapolis Armory on Tuesday. In recent months, the family has received well wishes and camaraderie from voices in the social justice community in addition to countless others.

In the clip Badu shared online, she’s seen with a Geroge Floyd’s sister, uncle, and aunt. There are also a few other family members visible as she pans her phone.

In the video Badu shares:

“People of planet Earth, we’re about four minutes away from George Floyd’s birthday. He would’ve been 48 years old and I’m here with his family now. It seems like we have a moment of peace right now and we know that your life was not in vain.”

She adds, “Thank you for your spirit and your sacrifice. So that we can move on the way that we should, be where we supposed to as a people.”

Floyd’s death was a traumatic moment that the entire nation experienced in 2020. It was yet another moment that further highlighting the relationship between African Americans and the police. In April, Derek Chauvin was convicted on all charges in the killing of Floyd following 11 hours of deliberation. 

Per a Minnesota CBS affiliate, beginning at 5 p.m. a celebration will take place at George Floyd Square in south Minneapolis. Family and friends plan to gather to honor the imprint Floyd left on them.
