Visual Culture: DJ Mars Presents 'The Art Behind The Tape' Mixtape Cover Art Book

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

DJ Mars has teamed with Kickstarter to raise funds to release The Art Behind The Tape - a coffee table book packed with mixtape cover art. The anthology intends to chronicle the evolution and cultural importance of artwork for mixtapes - the unofficial demo most rising hip-hop artists have used to establish themselves and remain connected to the streets, producing tapes exclusive of projects released to satisfy record label obligation. The people behind the project are hoping to illuminate the artwork that accompanies these projects and often plays second fiddle to the music behind it. The project will include examples of cover art from a host of sources including DJ Drama's Gangsta Grillz mixtape series, Kid Capri and A Tribe Called Quest. Check the video below.
