De La Soul's Massively Successful Kickstarter Campaign Tops Out At $600,000

The Bizness of crowdfunding has been good to De La Soul. Earlier today the hip-hop trio's Kickstarter campaign--the one that hit its $110,000 goal in less than a day--ended with a staggering final total of $600,874. Over 11,000 donors opened their wallets for the noble cause.

De La Soul's fund page went live on April 2nd and has been a bellwether of the devotion that still inhabits their fan base. Dollars raised from the fund will go toward the writing, recording and release of a brand new LP, their first full length since 2004's The Grind Date.

In a brief description of the record-yet-to-be, the band attested to a new sound that incorporated "elements of Jazz, Funk, Rock, Country Western and anything else we're feeling in the moment," and a host of features including Little Dragon, David Byrne, 2 Chainz and Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn. To express their gratitude, the band posed the following statement to Kickstarter:

Thank you so much to all of you for rewarding us with your time and help!! We have not only become the second most funded music project on Kickstarter, but we have also gained a clearer insight into how you feel about us as a group and what we do. You have helped directly play a part in giving us the much needed creative fuel by showing that we still matter to all of you! In knowing that we feel nothing less than number 1!!! Much love and this music is coming your way soon!!

Production on the new record is expected to begin next month, and word of what the group plans to spend the extra $500k on is still forthcoming. Fans that contributed large amounts to the fund will receive an array of perks--including, for those extra-generous souls, a day of kicking it in the studio with the group.
