“I want to tell the story of my evolution, and the events that led me to protest systemic oppression.”
Colin Kaepernick has announced he’ll be releasing a memoir through a self-titled publishing company he has founded.
According to The New York Times, he’s also teaming up with Audible, the audiobook company which will release an audio version of the memoir. Additionally, other titles under the Kaepernick Publishing company will also receive audio versions.
In a press release rolled out yesterday, he stated:
“My protest was the culmination of years of thought and experiences, of learning and unlearning. I want to tell the story of my evolution, and the events that led me to protest systemic oppression, in hopes that it will inspire others to rise in action. I am excited that through this groundbreaking partnership between Kaepernick Publishing and Audible, we can elevate Black and Brown voices who can empower future generations.”
Kaepernick plans to put the power in the hands of black and brown writers, authors and creators by officially launching his publishing company, reports USA Today. “It’s not just my control over stories. We didn’t want to monopolize that and hold that to ourselves. It’s something that should be distributed to the people who are putting in the work to be able to tell their stories and tell them in a genuine and authentic way,” he said.
On his love for books:
“I’ve always had an interest in books. I’ve had an interest in black literature. The Autobiography of Malcolm X was a book that changed my life, so much that every Know Your Rights camp that we have, we give the book to all of the youth that attend. And black literature was something that was key to developing my own thoughts and ideas of how to navigate the spaces that I enter.”
When describing the upcoming memoir he shared it will reveal “the life experiences that led him to risk his career as a star N.F.L. Super Bowl quarterback in one silent act of protest.” At the moment, the memoir is described as “part political awakening and part memoir.” It will be released later this year and is currently untitled.
We are proud to announce the first release on #KaepernickPublishing will be @Kaepernick7 ‘s memoir. The story tells of the experiences that led to the act of protest that has inspired the world. Available thru @audible_com and print/ebook in 2020. #PressRelease pic.twitter.com/U2hkGCPhT5
