If you caught some of our Facebook Live musings yesterday afternoon, you may have caught wind of the fact that Cody ChesnuTT has a fresh new batch of socially and politically edged cuts on the way. This morning he officially shares the lead-off single from his forthcoming album, My Love Devine Degree, “Bullets In The Streets And Blood,” featuring none other than Raphael Saadiq on bass.
Departing from his hallmark throwback romance records, ChesnuTT builds a poignant plea out of 808s and electronics, heartbreak intact. Only his pain here is rooted in the ills of a doomed generation, maimed in the streets, deprived of substantive art. He tells Noisey, that much of his new album was inspired by The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ, a book that was given to him by his girlfriend that offers different takes on the teachings of Christ. Cody ChesnuTT’s new album is due in early 2017, but for now, you can get your first taste by watching the video for “Bullets In The Streets And Blood” down below. A supporting tour is also expected, so be sure to hold tight for his next transmission.
