Daptone X SXSW - Presents the Super Soul Revue

It is sort of hard to believe that Daptone Records has never had occasion to lay the funk down at SXSW, the annual pilgrimage made by musicians all over the world to the mecca of indy music. While SXSW has faced criticism from people who feel the event has been watered down as it's grown in size and popularity over the past several years, it remains a hub of innovation and growth for techies, filmmakers, and musicians. With that in mind, the Daptone invasion is long overdue. Almost anomalous in the industry with respect to their roster and recording process, Daptone Records has been the driving force behind the resurgence of the horn section over the past several years as unequivocal keepers of the funk. Founded by Gabriel Roth and Neil Sugarman, the label is home to Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Charles Bradley, The Budos Band, Menahan Street Band, and more. Getting back to work after a devastating robbery in 2009, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings have wowed capacity crowds at Madison Square Garden with Prince, Antibalas' horn section supported The Roots in backing Michael Kiwanuka during a recent performance of "Tell Me A Tale" from his debut album on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Home Again, and Charles Bradley's single "Strictly Reserved For You" from his album No Time For Dreaming has been getting major play. Theirs is a roster that resembles the musical equivalent of the original dream team - a reputation that precedes them enough that it is safe to say their shows will sell out quickly.
