BJ The Chicago Kid enlists the help of some local friends on his latest single “Church,” a moody number that finds the young singer torn between vice and religion. “She said she wanna drink, do drugs, and have sex tonight / But I got church in the mornin'” he croons during the introduction, setting the scene for a classic take on the moral struggle between the pleasures of the flesh and the quest for piety and faith. Just which does he ultimately opt for? That’s for you to listen and find out. Chance The Rapper stops by to drop an excellent mid-song verse, and Compton MC Buddy pitches in as well. A song of soul-searching sentiments stretched across backwards guitar and a sparse, chopping drum beat, “Church” is yet another sign that BJ’s career is going to be a great one.
Just earlier this week we heard BJ take a turn on the Raphael Saadiq neo-soul classic “Charlie Ray.” Here, however, he’s keeping his reverence modern. Listen to “Church” below, and check out the young soul phenom’s fall tour schedule after the jump.
