Biz Markie’s publicist refutes the rumor that the New York-bred rapper passed on Wednesday evening. “Biz is still under medical care, surrounded by professionals who are working hard to provide the best healthcare possible,” reads an official statement.
On Wednesday evening, fans took to social media to send their condolences for Biz Markie’s passing at 57. But according to a rep from his team, the New York rap legend is still alive.
According to Rolling Stone, a statement from the representative read, “Biz is still under medical care, surrounded by professionals who are working hard to provide the best healthcare possible.”
The statement also addressed his fans and others who were sharing their love for the rapper. “Biz’s wife and family are touched by the outpouring of love and admiration from his friends, peers and fans alike. At this time, we ask for your continued thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
During an April interview with The Breakfast Club, Big Daddy Kane shared that Markie was recovering from a stroke. “He’s getting better,” he said. “He’s in rehabilitation now. He’s getting better and stronger every day. Last time I talked to him on the phone, he got a real light voice, but last time I talked on the phone.”
Markie was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in 2010 and since then has battled health issues. Three years ago he lost 140 pounds in an attempt to manage his health. He was reportedly hospitalized twice last year.
In 2014, he shared the following with ABC News:
“I wanted to live. Since I have to be a diabetic, If I didn’t make the changes, it was going to make the diabetes worse. I’m trying to get off [the diabetes meds]. The way you gotta do it is lose the weight. I’m off half my meds, I just got to get off the rest … [The doctors] said I could lose my feet. They said I could lose body parts. A lot of things could happen.”
Markie whose real name is Marcel Theo Hall is most known for his 1989 single “Just A Friend.” The track successfully charted at No. 9 on Billboard’s Hot 100 after its release.
We’re keeping Biz Markie and his entire family in our prayers and we’re also hoping he pulls through.
