Atlantic Records UK President Ben Cook Resigns Over "Offensive" Run-DMC Costume

In his seven years as president, Cook gave Ed Sheeran his first record deal and also worked with Stormzy's Merky Records.

In a shocking admission, Atlantic Records' UK president Ben Cook has announced his resignation due to an offensive Run-DMC birthday party costume he once wore. Cook expressed his remorse in a statement.

"Seven years ago, at a birthday party where guests were asked to come dressed as their favorite musical icon, I came as a member of Run-DMC," he said in a statement via the BBC. "While my intention was to honor a musical hero, I recognize my appearance was offensive and I made a terrible mistake."

"Late last year, rumors began to circulate about my appearance at that event, many of which are simply untrue," the statement continued. "As a consequence of this, I readily agreed to disciplinary actions by my employer last year. Since then however, allegations surrounding the party have continued to be made against me. I have therefore come to the conclusion that I should make this statement and step down, with immediate effect."

"I am devastated that this mistake has caused upset and has called into question my commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, values which I have championed throughout my career," he added.

In his seven years with Atlantic, Cook signed Ed Sheeran to his first record contract in 2011. Last year, he entered a joint venture with Stormzy's Merky Records. During his tenure, Atlantic's share of the UK album market grew to 7.9%. Cook was employed by the label for 12 years in total.
