The Queen Of Soul Salutes Prince At The White House

Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin Pays Tribute To Prince At The White House's International Jazz Day Celebration With A Performance Of "Purple Rain."

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, paid tribute to Prince with a performance of "Purple Rain" at the White House's star-studded International Jazz Day celebration. The performance broadcast on Saturday boasted an impressive lineup of musical legends and rising innovators including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Terri Lynn Carrington, Chucho Valdés, Sting, Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper and Terrace Martin. Surfacing around the 74-minute mark, Aretha's brief rendition of the purple power ballad captures the blues lurking below the surface of the track. Her set also included a take on the brooding soul standard "A Song For You," popularized by Donny Hathaway. Check the footage below to watch the full webcast for International Jazz Day. Fast forward to catch Aretha's performance. Get more on International Jazz Day via unesco.org and jazzday.com
