Aretha Franklin Tears Through A Cover Of Gloria Gaynor's Disco Anthem "I Will Survive"
Aretha Franklin drops off yet another stellar rework of a classic as she tackles Gloria Gaynor's disco anthem "I Will Survive" for her forthcoming Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics. Soul's still-reigning Queen gets a little jazzy on the cut, laying her soaring vox over a change-of-pace flip, commencing with a creeping slow-burn and morphing into the four-to-the-floor icono-cut we've all grown to love, then hitting a quick homage to Destiny Child's "Survivor" before jumping back into the high-voltage shuffle-inducer.
It's just another taste of the magic what's on the way from genre-defining soulstress, linking with Andre 3000 and Babyface for her forthcoming covers LP, which will see Franklin jump on to cuts from Prince, Adele, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Etta James and more. Aretha Franklin Sings The Diva Classics is set to drop October 21st via RCA and it can be preorder on iTunes today. "Just before I knew I would record “I Will Survive,” I brought Gloria Gaynor’s book We Will Survive and enjoyed the inspiring stories from the various sections. “I Will Survive” is a great song and one of the terrific party songs of an era. I had a ball doing it! It also spans generations as it’s my granddaughter Victorie and my favorite song! We’re survivors for sure. Love it!!!"
