Afropunk Festival Announces Lineup Including Lenny Kravitz, Lauryn Hill, Danny Brown, Grance Jones + More
The official lineup for the 2015 Afropunk Festival has finally been announced, and music fans of just about every stripe will find something to look forward to. Legends including Grace Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Lauryn Hill and Danny Brown have been slated as headliners for the event, which runs August 22-23rd. Beyond the marquee, a fantastic roster of supporting acts will also perform, including Kaytranada, Raury, Kelis, Thundercat, Lion Babe and the Soulection crew.
The 2015 festival will once again take place in Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park and will be preceded on August 21st by the first-ever "AFROPUNK FANCY DRESS BALL," a high-class soireé led by (who else?) Grace Jones that will raise funds for the the Afropunk Global Initiative, "an alliance dedicated to moving the needle of progress closer to a holistic, democratic and enlightened representation of people of color within all facets of society with the goal to create unique programming that encourages diversity in media."
Also new for this year's Afropunk is an affordable paid and earned ticket system. Given the festival's notoriously massive attendance (60,000 in 2014), organizers have partnered with community organizations across New York City to create an array of "low barrier volunteer activities and projects" that will be required of anyone that hopes to attend the event itself. Ticketing information and sales (for those who prefer to just pay up for their entry) go live on June 3rd and can be found here.
