It's been a long time coming, but it appears that the high-anticipated documentary on Roland's foundational TR-808 drum machine has finally set its date. Hard to believe, really, but the doc treatment, an effort spearheaded by the film's producer, Alex Noyer, director Alexander Dunn and the legendary Arthur Baker, has been teased in short and long forms for almost five years, but according to Deadspin, will finally see release in US theaters this summer (as a London screening took place last summer.) Though a precise date has yet to be revealed, 808 will be an Apple Music and iTunes exclusive, with limited screenings in theaters nationwide.
If you happened to have caught the trailer for the film (down below) then you already know just how massive a production this thing is, wrangling the likes of Questlove, Afrika Bambaataa, Pharrell, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, and damn-near every beat making maven this side of Planet Rock for their expertise. The only point of reference we currently have for a time of arrival is the summer, but you can be sure we'll have the official date for you just as soon as it makes its way through the internet grapevines. Peep the trailer for 808 and hold tight for the next transmission.
