The producer picks up the pace on a late-80s r&b gem.
Loose Kaytranada drops are getting fewer and farther between these days. But as the country (the world?) braces for a call in the 2020 presidential election, the producer hit his old digital haunts with some heat to buoy spirits in uncertain times.
Earlier this afternoon, the beatmaker uploaded an entrancing edit of Sade’s “Love is Stronger Than Pride.” The remix picks up the pace on a butter-smooth late-80s r&b gem, stacking some sparse drums and percussion over a warm and whispy loop that dissolves as gracefully as it enters. The “Love is Stronger Than Pride” recalibration arrives on the heels of a batch of demos and outtakes posted to Soundcloud in late-summer, teasing vaulted experiments and some BADBADNOTGOOD collaborations that have yet to leave the cutting room floor. Kaytranada also contributed most of the production to a new mixtape from his little brother, Lou Phelps. That project, EXTRA, EXTRA, is out now.
In terms of official releases, the producer’s latest album, BUBBA dropped at the end of last year with a massive guest list, including appearances from Masego, VanJess, Mick Jenkins, Tinashe, Goldlink, Pharrell, and more. He also shared the instrumentals for the sophomore full-length as a standalone set, which has already delivered some damn-good mash-up fodder. And though catching him live and direct has been complicated (if not made entirely impossible) by the pandemic era, the producer has partnered with Moment House to broadcast a pair of live sets this weekend from Montreal’s Societe Des Arts Technologiques. Tickets for the livestream events are on sale now.
