Nelly was arrested and booked on second-degree rape in October, after a woman accused the rapper of raping her on his tour bus in a town near Seattle. Accuser Monique Greene previously halted cooperation with prosecutors and ultimately decided not to testify against him. Nelly had denied the claims as “defaming” and planned to take legal action to clear his name.
New case details emerge as TMZ reports that Greene has now filed a lawsuit against Nelly for sexual assault and defamation, claiming the rapper and his team launched a smear campaign saying she was after "money, fame and notoriety."
King County prosecutors had declined to charge Nelly with rape, telling Associated Press that they had reviewed the investigation but could not "proceed or fully assess the merits of the case" without the woman's help.
The accuser’s attorney, Karen Koehler says Greene chose to halt the investigation “because she believes the system is going to fail her,” in a letter acquired by Buzzfeed. She wrote "We do not live in a society where a 21-year-old college student can feel safe enough to pursue criminal charges against a celebrity for an alleged rape." She continued, “One day, maybe our world will change and 30 women will not be needed to (eventually) speak out against a celebrity who has hurt them in order to be believed. But that day has not yet come.”
