The album was recorded while R. Kelly was still under contract with Sony.

R. Kelly is trying to release a new album that was made while he was still signed to Sony's RCA Records.

According to Billboard, the R&B singer reclaimed ownership of his unreleased works "as part of his agreement to leave the record label" as part of his agreement to leave RCA. His leave came two weeks after the premiere of Surviving R. Kelly, the Lifetime documentary series centered around the artist's mental, physical, and sexual abuse allegations. The singer's team has been looking for a new distributor for months, even before the docuseries was released.

Billboard also notes that Kelly has a few options in regards to releasing his album including "going through an indie distributor or signing a deal with a new label to potentially uploading the project directly onto Spotify."

However, a rep for the music streaming service said the direct-upload feature is still in the works and available to "only a small number of artists, which does not include Kelly."

Recently, a Philadelphia councilwoman introduced a bill to ban the artist from the city.

"If you're a rapist or a child molester, you’re not welcome in Philadelphia," Helen Gym previously said. "I think we live at an incredible moment in time where we are no longer accepting the protection of powerful men at the expense of women."
