The Prince Estate partnered with Warner Records for the release.

Prince fans received a small gift on Thursday. The Purple One’s estate has dropped a previously unreleased version of “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man” from 1979. The release comes months ahead of the forthcoming expanded reissue of Prince’s 1987 album Sign O’ the Times.

The previously-unreleased version of the song was recorded at Hollywood Sound Recorders and engineered by Bob Mockler. The sessions date back to Prince’s self-titled album. The song features just live drums and claps, bass, lead guitar, synths, and nine layers of Prince vocals. In 1986, Prince re-recorded the track, which was then featured on the Times album.

Last month, Prince’s estate released “Witness 4 The Prosecution (Version 1),” a song intended for “Dream Factory.” The Super Deluxe edition of Sign O’ the Times will feature 63 previously unreleased tracks, including two entire concerts. His 1987 New Year’s Eve show with Miles Davis will appear on the album.
