Okayplayer Presents 'On & On,' a Monthly Neo-Soul Party in Los Angeles

Onon 7

Okayplayer wants you to come out and vibe to some neo-soul.

Neo-soul isn't dead. The sub-genre is still prospering, with acts like The Internet and Ari Lennox carrying the torch.

And as long as this site is around — we've been celebrating our 20-year anniversary all 2019 — we're going to be celebrating the sub-genre that has given us acts like Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, and Jill Scott.

Today (July 10th) we are proud to announce that we will be hosting a monthly Los Angeles-based neo-soul party, alongside DJs Jasmine Solano and BVDí. The series is called On & On: A Night of Neo Soul and the goal is simple: to try and recreate the vibes and atmosphere of the iconic Black Lily series from the early 2000s.

The first On & On kicks off on Thursday, July 18th at the Paper Tiger, and it will be hosted by singer (and First Look Friday alumna) Tiffany Gouché.

Speaking about the party, and what to expect, Jasmine, who is originally from Philadelphia, and who knows all too well the importance of neo-soul, said:

This is the kind of party we’ve been waiting for and finally decided make it our own passion project. In a very “turn-up” oriented LA landscape, we’ve created an alternative space for folks who need a break from distorted trap 808s and want to groove to timeless Neo-Soul bass lines. We can’t wait to play all of our favorite D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Musiq Soulchild, Sade... We‘re honestly so excited to play records we usually don’t get to play and really celebrate the music we love that helped shaped all of our own artistic identities.

On & On will take place at Paper Tiger, which has built a rep as a hidden gem in LA:

There’s no place in LA quite like it. From the first moment we stepped into the venue we knew we could do something special here. It feels very intimate, with the right vibe for a night of good conversation over a well-made cocktail. A rarity in LA.

Thes best part about all of this? It's free. All you have to do is RVSP. Check out the link below.
