The 4:44 rapper has hired a lawyer to work on Savage’s case according to TMZ. Savage was arrested last weekend by ICE in Atlanta, with the federal agency claiming that the rapper was unlawfully present in the United States as a UK citizen. Savage has since confirmed that he was born in the UK and came to the U.S. when at the age of seven.

“In addition to being a successful recording artist, Savage deserves to be reunited with his children immediately,” Jay-Z said, describing Savage’s arrest as “an absolute travesty.” The artist and entrepreneur also acknowledged that Savage’s U Vise application has been pending ever since he applied for it in 2017.

Alex Spiro, the attorney hired by Jay, also released a statement to TMZ with the following:

“We are not going to stop until he is released, bonded out or in front of a judge. What we have here is someone who overstayed their Visa with an application pending for four years—not a convicted criminal that needs to be detained and removed but, by all accounts a wonderful person, father, and entertainer who has a marijuana offense which was vacated and sealed.”

Since his arrest, Black Lives Matter co-founder, Patrisse Cullors, has launched an online petition in an attempt to stop 21 Savage’s possible deportation.

“The circumstances of Mr. Abraham-Joseph’s detention stand as a testament to the consistent and historically under-reported harassment and targeting of Black immigrants,” the petition’s description reads. “The US’ violent history of criminalizing Blackness intersects with its deadly legacy of detaining and deporting Black and Brown immigrants. This needs to stop today!”
