This release follows the singer-songwriter’s last album, Normal in 2018.
After rolling out his latest single “It’s Complicated,” California-based singer Garren drops his debut album The (New) Normal.
Growing up in South Central LA and Compton was no small feat for the R&B singer who constantly battled with societal pressures. His large musical family pushed him towards music which ultimately became his passion. The 11-track album is a culmination of his ability to create tracks reminiscent of the massively successful R&B hits from the ‘90s while redefining himself.
The New Normal “[is] more focused on how it is growing up in South Central and Compton and the mindset you have to get out of these environments,'” Garren said. He also shared, “Making decisions for the future and not getting caught in the temporary satisfaction. That is what I call being normal.”
Ahead of the release of the album, we fell hard for the following tracks “Deepest Sex,” “Addicted” and “It’s Complicated.” Though “Deepest Sex” and “Addicted” are respectively the ninth and tenth tracks on the album, they’re clear standouts with similar sounds. “Energy” and “It’s Complicated” which released separately as singles are more mellow tracks. The lyrics in “Energy” point to Garren falling for someone who he’d like to date monogamously. While “It’s Complicated” explores the notion of fighting through rough times with a partner who might just be unsure of what they want.
Last year, the singer-songwriter shifted his gears a bit and worked on a film directed by Tari Wariebe, it documented what it was like growing up in Compton. Titled Normal: The New Documentary, the project also focused on Garren chasing his dreams as he stayed true to himself. In 2018, he earned his first Grammy nomination for contributing vocals to Nipsey Hussle’s song “Dedication” off of the critically acclaimed album Victory Lap.
