The global artist reflects on why he believed the 2019 film's music lacked "magic" and "joy."

Elton John recently spoke candidly with British GQ in an in-depth feature about his thoughts on the remake of The Lion King starring Beyoncé and Donald Glover. During the aforementioned interview, John shared, "The new version of The Lion King was a huge disappointment to me, because I believe they messed the music up."

John who provided songs for the 1994 original went on to share:

"Music was so much a part of the original and the music in the current film didn’t have the same impact. The magic and joy were lost."

He also noted that despite the major "box-office success," the soundtrack fell off of the charts "quickly." In contrast, the original soundtrack was the bestselling album of the year, according to John. The Lion King 2019 movie soundtrack included Elton's previous song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and his new original "Never Too Late." Beyoncé also curated The Lion King: The Gift, another movie soundtrack which featured Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams, Tierra Whack, Burna Boy and other global artists.
